Active Hope
Facing the Mess We're In with Unexpected Resilience and Creative Power
In a world unravelling from the weight of climate change, conflict, mental health crises, and ecological breakdown, it’s easy to feel powerless. But what if this moment—however overwhelming—could also be a call to action, to purpose, and to connection?
Active Hope offers a way to meet these times not with despair, but with courage and clarity. Based on the groundbreaking work of Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone, this approach isn’t about wishful thinking—it’s about finding your strength, acting for what matters, and nourishing a hopeful, life-sustaining future.
What is Active Hope?
Active Hope is both a book and a free online training that guides you through a seven-week journey of reflection, resilience, and action. It’s about engaging with the challenges of our time not by turning away—but by turning toward them, together.
How can Active Hope help you?
I hear many people say that they feel powerless to make a difference and find it overwhelming to stay engaged. Such disempowerment has a marked impact on our mental health.
There are so many amazing people doing such incredibly important work and so much wisdom available to us with ideas about how to shift the current trajectory of catastrophe towards a Life Sustaining Society. And yet, it can feel hard to access this and translate wisdom into personal action.
I feel that Active Hope inspires participants to engage with their personal experience of what they love and what they hope for. The Spiral at the centre of the Work that Reconnects enables people to see that their personal story belongs to the bigger story generating a sense of purpose and possibility.
Stories happen through people
I’m hosting taster sessions to share Active Hope with the idea of bringing people together and keeping the conversation going around the question of “what can support me to respond to the issues that concern me?”
If you come to one of these:
- You may leave with fresh perspectives
- You may feel more connected and grounded
- You might be inspired to read the book, try the free online course, or join a full group programme in future
